Contrast

I was recently asked by a local magazine to define my personal style. It was a question I have been asked before but for some reason this time my response was different; “I enjoy contrast.” After thinking about it, I realized this idea is most likely inspired by my mixed heritage; my mother is East Indian and my father is German. I often enjoy opposite aesthetics coexisting together. For example, my emails are never ending yet I’m obsessive about hand written thank you notes. I love wearing a suit but am very comfortable throwing on dark jeans and leather jacket. It was an “aha” moment that allowed me to experience and define my love for fashion and design in a more focused way.

This contrast in my personal style requires a couple key wardrobe staples. In Seattle we can wake up to overcast skies, walk to work in the rain and, if we’re lucky, catch a glimmer of sunlight all in the same day.  Which is why I have been loving this Chesterfield-style coat from Zara. My friends now call it an “Andrew signature” because I wear it all the time. And even though spring has officially arrived I anticipate wearing this coat several more times before experiencing consistent sunshine. I love this design because of the fit around the shoulders – snug, but not tight – while the faux leather panel along the lapel adds a modern aesthetic to a classic silhouette, transitioning easily from day to evening.
